The Arizona Technology Council, an association of hightech businesses, announced plans Wednesday to move from downtown Tempe to the SkySong office/research park being built by Arizona State University and partners at the former Los Arcos Mall site in Scottsdale.
The council will occupy space in the first of two buildings under construction at the 37-acre site at the southeast corner of Scottsdale and McDowell roads. The amount of space is still being negotiated, said SkySong spokeswoman Michele Irwin.
Construction began on the project in April, and the first building will be ready for occupancy in mid-2007, she said.
The council is now at the Brickyard complex, 699 S. Mill Ave.
SkySong, also known as the ASU Innovation Center, is a high-profile development designed to bring university research and entrepreneurial projects together with private businesses to facilitate commerce, technology, education and economic development.
Among the programs ASU plans to locate in the center are the Edson Student Entrepreneur Initiative, Arizona Technology Enterprises, ASU Technopolis and engineering research programs.
Other non-ASU tenants that have announced plans to locate in the center are Wildfire Broadband Communications, a Scottsdale company that will be the wireless provider for the center as well as a tenant, and eFunds Corp., a Scottsdale company that produces payments processing and information software.
Todd Bankofier, chairman of the technology council, said SkySong is a good location for the organization, which promotes the interests of hightech companies.
“The council works very closely with many of ASU’s research, innovation and entrepreneurial units that will be located at SkySong, and we anticipate greatly increasing the connections we make between the university and the technology community as a result of our SkySong affiliation,” he said.
Adding the technology council also will help SkySong attract more high-tech companies to the site, said Sharon Harper, president of Plaza Companies, a co-developer of the project.
At full build out, the development will consist of 1.2 million square feet of research, office and retail space along with residential units organized around a boulevard lined with stores, restaurants and cultural institutions.
The first two buildings consisting of more than 320,000 square feet of commercial space are under construction. About 70 percent of the first building has been leased, Irwin said. No tenants have been announced for the second building.
Leasing activities are being handled by CB Richard Ellis. Co-developers are the Plaza Companies and Higgins Development Partners in partnership with the ASU Foundation and USAA Real Estate Co.
