One of the Valley's oldest restaurant chains has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Bill Johnson's Big Apple CEO Sherry Cameron told the Phoenix Business Journal that the economic downturn hit the business her grandfather built hard, but no layoffs or restaurant closures are expected for the chain, which employs about 200 people.

In addition to the original location at 37th Street and Van Buren streets in Phoenix, there are locations at Main Street west of Stapley Drive in Mesa, 19th Avenue and Bell Road in Phoenix, 31st Avenue and Indian School Road in Phoenix and 1330 N. Dysart Road in Goodyear.

The company celebrated its 55th anniversary April 30 with a carnival at its Mesa location.
