Tiny Cokes, chips, crackers and cookies have changed the landscape of the snack food aisle and become the latest consumer craze. Last year the snack industry grew only 3 percent while the 100-calorie pack branch of the industry grew 10 times that amount, with annual sales reaching $20 million. But for shoppers, downsized snacks come at an inflated price. The cost of these products, when compared ounce-to-ounce, can be up to twice as much.

Still, many consumers seem happy to pay more for the convenience. “They’re convenient, and it helps me keep my portions under control,” says Denise McAndrews of Mesa during a recent grocery store trip. “I get to eat my favorite foods without overindulging.”
