The Arizona Retailers Association is gearing up to mount a public-relations campaign to garner support for requiring online retailers to collect state sales tax.
The Arizona Capitol Times (http://bit.ly/Mguy6I) reports that the aim of the association's campaign would be to increase pressure on legislators to force online retailers to collect sales tax.
Arizonans are already supposed to pay tax on online purchases but few do.
The issue is the association's top priority but Executive Director Michelle Ahlmer says the group won't begin the campaign until after a task force appointed by Gov. Jan Brewer holds its first meeting later this month.
The task force is to consider various sales tax issues but those are expected to include collection of tax on online purchases.

The states all need money. They are losing hundreds of millions to the internet sales crooks. Of course the consumers who flock to on-line sites couldn't care less about their neighborhoods as these on-line retailers are destroying many small shops. You who buy on-line cry about the loss of jobs overseas but turn a blind eye to the fact that most products on-line are made outside of this country. I shop and eat locally, as well as seek out made in America items for my use. It takes time and effort, but at least I'm not a hypocrite about it.

They say the no tax thing was to promote the growth of the internet. It is plenty big now. The software and tables to collect and record the sales tax based on ship-to zip code is readily available. The internet has the advantages of choice and convenience - they don't need the tax advantage too!
