Arizona Public Service Company's Paloma Solar Power Plant is aimed at the sun and is now generating electricity for 4,200 customers.

It's the first facility to reach commercial operation as part of the AZ Sun Program. APS also placed the Cotton Center Solar Plant in commercial operation earlier this week adding 17 megawatts of electricity. Both plants are located in Gila Bend.

APS has two more solar plants in the works.

The Paloma plant consists of 275,000 thin-film panels mounted on fixed-tilt steel supports designed to soak up the sun's rays.

With Paloma and the Cotton Center plant, APS's total renewable energy portfolio is 930 megawatts including projects online and in development.
