The Arizona Animal Welfare League and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals are asking for your vote in order to win $25,000 in a nationwide challenge to save more lives.
AAWL and SPCA are competing in the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge, and ranks third in its division and fourth in the nation, based on its 139 percent increase in the number of animals saved and adopted.
That increase puts the organization in the running for a $25,000 community engagement prize.
To win, AAWL and SPCA need people to vote for it once a day through Oct. 31 by going to www.votetosavelives.org.
The biggest winners will be the homeless dogs and cats that get a second chance at life during the three-month competition. In August and September, the state’s oldest and largest no-kill shelter found new homes for 816 cats and dogs.
Maricopa County has one of the highest rates of homeless animals in the United States because of the recession, home foreclosures and reluctance by some owners to have their pets spayed or neutered. As the state’s largest no-kill animal welfare organization, AAWL and SPCA rescue adoptable dogs and cats from “open-intake” facilities like the county shelter, saving them from euthanasia, and find permanent homes for them. All adoptable animals at AAWL and SPCA are vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and microchipped, and have received any other medical care needed.
AAWL and SPCA also are asking anyone thinking of welcoming a new pet into their home to consider adopting one before the end of this month.
AAWL and SPCA were named the Best Place to Save a Life in the Valley, as well as earning recognition for its veterinary services, pet training classes, adoption program and volunteer opportunities.
