The Phoenix Symphony launches its annual Classroom Concerts with performances in schools throughout the Valley beginning in early October.
Additional Classroom Concerts opportunities are offered in April. Resident conductor Joseph Young and musicians in the orchestra perform and moderate a program that is designed to inspire students to become involved in school music programs, provide an intimate concert experience and create a deeper understanding of orchestral music.
“The Phoenix Symphony Classroom Concerts give students an opportunity that I was not given growing up: the opportunity to experience a performance by professional musicians at such a young age,” Young said. “Our programs are geared to teach students about music and possibly inspire some of them to be involved in music.”
For more than 30 years, The Phoenix Symphony String Ensemble, Brass & Percussion Ensemble and Woodwind Ensemble perform at nearly 30 schools reaching approximately 12,000 students. The Classroom Concerts engage students and cultivate musical interest in schools. The goal of the program is to introduce students to live orchestra music by bringing the concert experience to them and to supplement the school’s music program. The program uses core concepts found in the Arizona State Arts and Learning Standards. Programs include information on the principals of sound production and interaction with the orchestra that involves students sitting in and conducting the ensemble.
The Classroom Concerts also seek to engage Title-1 schools that have little or no arts funding with reduced rates for the program. The program is made possible by donations from Nationwide Insurance Foundation, Chase, Dr. Scholl Foundation, The Kemper and Ethel Marley Foundation, The Hearst Foundations, The Steele Foundation, Sundome Performing Arts Association, The Whiteman Foundation, Glendale Cultural Affairs Commission, Tempe Cultural Services, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and many individuals through The Phoenix Symphony Annual Fund.
