Valley of the Sun United Way is reminding taxpayers that more workers than ever may be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit, which can put up to $5,666 in their pockets, according to a news release.

Families or individuals who earned $48,362 or less in 2010 may qualify. Last year, 520,722 Arizonans received nearly $1.2 billion in EITC refunds and, nationwide, $58 billion was claimed, according to the release.

Taxpayers can get free help determining EITC eligibility, and filing their taxes at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites throughout the Valley. These sites are staffed by trained volunteers and run by various community partners.

To check tax credit eligibility, go to www.irs.gov or visit a VITA site. For a list of local VITA sites, contact Community Information and Referral at (602) 263-8856 or visit www.cir.org/tax.
