A Phoenix man arrested in a double rape linked to the Baseline Killer crime spree was charged Thursday in a 20-count, grand jury indictment. The grand jury added two more sexual assault charges and a drug charge to what Mark Goudeau was initially accused of in a criminal complaint filed Monday.

Goudeau, 42, faces two counts of kidnapping, two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of attempted sexual assault, three counts of sexual abuse, 10 counts of sexual assault and one count of cocaine use or possession.

Maricopa County Superior Court Judge David Cunanan ordered Goudeau be held without bail on sexual assault charges and $1 million bail on the other charges, said Krystal Garza, spokeswoman for the county attorney's office.

Corwin Townsend, Goudeau's lawyer, said he has received little information on the case so far, but he has found some legal issues. For instance, he said, the two sisters who were raped Sept. 20 picked someone else besides Goudeau in photo lineups.

County Attorney Andrew Thomas said his prosecutors have a "strong case." "Based on the evidence that's come to my attention, I feel very good about the investigation," Thomas said.

According to court documents, Phoenix police linked Goudeau to the crime through DNA. Police believe the Baseline Killer is responsible for 23 rapes, robberies and homicides since August 2005, one of which is the Sept. 20 rapes Goudeau is charged. Thomas urged the public to remain patient as police investigate the other crimes.
