Police have arrested a Phoenix man they believe is responsible for the deaths of two Scottsdale residents burned in a fiery hit-and-run collision earlier this week.

Ryan Ernest Nevarez, 24, was arrested Monday on suspicion of two counts of vehicular homicide and one count of leaving the scene of a crash, Scottsdale detective Sam Bailey said Tuesday.

Nestor Soriano-Sanchez, 30, and Elia Margarita Chavez-Uribe, 33, died when their car was struck by Nevarez’s sedan on Thomas Road near North 64th Street, police said. Their car ran into a utility pole, hit a fire hydrant and burst into flames.

Nevarez turned himself in to police several hours after the collision and was taken to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn hospital, where he had surgery, Bailey said.

Detectives are waiting for toxicology test results for Nevarez, Bailey said.
