Took my first tour of spring football this week and I wasn’t the only one there by any means.
Arizona State, Southern Cal, Texas were some of the college programs to come through this week.
Offers are seemingly coming from all over the place as Mountain Pointe sophomores Jalen Brown and Natrel Curtis can add Boise State and Vanderbilt as possible destinations.
Additionally, junior offensive lineman Kenny Lacy received his invitation to participate in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio on Jan 5.
The one of the other things I noticed was the size of Wesley Payne, a sophomore linebacker who was listed as 5-foot-9 and 179 pounds last year when he averaged 8.3 tackles and 5.2 yards a carry.
I’m guessing he has a cot in the weight room.
His older brother, Landry, is just as impressive and they will be terrors this fall.
Over at Desert Vista, Kaleb Germinaro was feeling better after having his track season end because of bursitis in his right hip.
He said he plans on going to Arizona’s camp and possibly Iowa and Iowa State as well. It isn’t a coincidence that former Desert Vista quarterback Cody Sokol is in Iowa.
“He’s been telling me I have to go there,” Germinaro said. “I haven’t seen that part of the country so I think it would be cool to see what it is all about.”
The other thing that caught my eye at DV was the actions of the Arizona State coach who was at practice. I believe it was running backs coach Larry Porter.
Anyway, when he was shaking hands with junior running back Jarek Hilgers the coach pulled Hilgers in close. I mean I-know-what-you-had-for-lunch close. Turns out he wasn’t sure if Hilgers was as tall as he remembered so he wanted to look at him eye-to-eye.
All I could think of was the “eyeball test” phrase. An odd and funny moment.
Anyway, it was good to get back to some football. Before we know it, the 7-on-7 tournaments will be here and gone and it will be mid-August and the season will be starting.
Can’t wait to see how it all plays out.
