Kent Johnson has been named publisher of the Ahwatukee Foothills News effective immediately.
1013 Communications has owned the Ahwatukee Foothills News since March of 2010 and has expanded its total weekly circulation to 84,000.
“We place tremendous value on our position in the Ahwatukee community to provide the best local news and advertising available,” said Terry Horne, general manager of 1013 Communications. “The AFN has strong roots in Ahwatukee and we look forward to expanding our visibility in the community as we continue to grow.
“Kent brings a proven track record and exceptional background to his new role, which will foster the kind of growth and development that will tremendously benefit Ahwatukee. Having Kent’s leadership in our Ahwatukee office will be critical for us to continue to build on our relationships in the community with our readers and advertisers.”
Johnson succeeds Mike Miller, who had served as publisher of the AFN since April of 2011.
“My time spent in Ahwatukee has been incredibly rewarding,” said Miller, who has been named publisher and general manager of 1013 Communications’ Star Community Newspapers in the Dallas area. “I have made many friends and it has been a great experience to work alongside the staff, residents and organizations of this great community.”
Johnson is not new to the Phoenix area or 1013 Communications, he most recently served as advertising director of 1013 Communications in its East Valley Tribune office in Tempe.
He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin with a degree in business administration with an emphasis on marketing communication. During his 13-year tenure with Gannett, Johnson worked at The Springfield Newsleader in Missouri, The Arizona Republic, and the St. Cloud Times in Minnesota. His final Gannett position was advertising director with Times Media. Johnson also served as vice president of advertising for Freedom Communications’ flagship newspaper, the Orange County Register. In that position he was named Freedom’s Advertising Director of the Year in 2009.
“My wife Kara and I have lived in Arizona for more than 12 years,” Johnson said. “Being able to work and live in the Ahwatukee area is truly a unique experience. Ahwatukee is a closely knit place that simply cannot be found anywhere else. I can’t wait to become more involved in such a great community.”
