A local boutique started by a mom wanting to teach her daughter about business is now opening its second location in the Valley in the Casa Paloma shopping center.

Lisa Looney began KatyBug Faye three years ago. At the time she was making rhinestone flip-flops for her daughter, Kathleen, and herself.

When her daughter told her she should sell the flip-flops, Looney thought it would be a good chance to teach her a lesson.

“I really just started thinking I would teach my daughter a little bit about business,” Looney said. “I got a tax ID because I wanted to do it the right way, and I thought with this I could go to market. So I did, and I started off just having parties at my house with jeans and T-shirts and flip-flops.”

After her first party, friends began booking parties at their own homes. Looney would bring a trailer full of clothes and accessories to their homes and the host would earn 20 percent of whatever was sold worth of clothes for herself.

The parties continued to grow until Looney decided to open her own boutique.

KatyBug Faye opened in Chandler two years ago. Now it’s coming to the Ahwatukee Foothills area.

“We found that we have quite a few customers that drive over here from Ahwatukee to shop,” Looney said. “When I decided to open another store I looked at the ZIP codes of all our customers and most of them are from this area, but we had a big group coming from the Ahwatukee area so it made perfect sense.”

KatyBug Faye sells womens and juniors clothing and accessories. They carry premium denim, dresses and tops and even have their own private label.

“We love helping people look their best,” Looney said. “What’s really fun about our boutique is we like to get to know our customers and get to know their taste and what fits them well. Whenever we hire a new employee they’re always amazed at how we know so many of our customers but we have the same people in over and over and we get to know what works well for them. There are certain styles that look better on different builds and we really just like to help people feel good about the way they look in clothes. When you feel like your outfit looks cute you portray that. That’s kind of the thing I think is our expertise. We don’t just sit here and let you shop and check you out, but we love to help when people want it.”

KatyBug Faye will open to the public on Sept. 21 at 7131 W. Ray Road, Suite 39, at 10 a.m. The first 50 customers into the shop will get a $10 gift card and there will be raffle prizes and special promotions throughout the weekend.
