From mid-May to July, kids from the Kyrene School District are participating in a new program where they get to attend field trips during a full-day camp.

Kyrene Adventure Tours is being piloted this summer at Kyrene del Pueblo Middle School in Chandler, but Ahwatukee kids have jumped at the opportunity to take trips to places like Golfland Sunsplash in Mesa, Slide Rock in Sedona, Dave & Buster’s in Tempe, and more.

“It’s so fun because we don’t normally get to do this,” said Marlee Sipe, of Kyrene de la Estrella, in between playing games at Dave & Buster’s last week at Tempe Marketplace.

In the first summer of the program brought on by the district, part of its community education and outreach services, the Adventure Tours are all-day programs with two on-site days for crafts, games and other activities, while the students get to travel around the Valley and state Tuesday through Thursday.

The program features nearly 30 different trip sites for the group of about 50 students.

“All of the trips are great,” said site specialist Eric Barr. “We get to see first-hand what field trips work and which ones we could change.”

Since this is the first year piloting the program, staff and volunteers hope to bring the tours to more school sites next year, which could include Ahwatukee schools.

The program will go through July 26 and is currently in the sixth week where students will travel to Stratum Laser Tag in Mesa, Polar Ice in Chandler, and Peter Piper Pizza. Earlier in the summer program, the students were taken to the Colossal Caverns in Tucson.

As an alternative to other summer programs, Barr said the tours are a great resource for parents to be able to trust that their kids are “being taken care of and not just sitting around.”

“It really is a top-notch program from the district all the way down to how staff interacts with the kids,” he said.
