Open enrollment preference will now be given to siblings of current Kyrene School District students and children of current Kyrene employees.

During a governing board meeting Tuesday, all five members voted on the policy amendment that will likely go into effect in January.

Students enrolled in a school during the previous school year, including any siblings, would then be concurrently enrolled.

In addition, any children of a current district employee would also be included in open enrollment.

“Our priority is to keep families together,” said Kelly Alexander, director of community education and outreach services for Kyrene.

Remaining residents and non-residents of the district’s boundaries new to a school will then be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, according to policy documents.

Open enrollment is for families living outside of Kyrene boundaries, or families living within who want to attend a school other than the one they are designated.

Enrollment priorities are also based on physical capacity and availability of staff.

Superintendent David Schauer said the change is something the district should have always done.

“This was originally something we wanted to make in terms of how we would treat our employees and the siblings from families of those who apply,” Schauer said.
