You know, this place really is a wonderful place to spend the holidays. There are so many events and charities unique to our community this time of year. Festival of Lights is the obvious one that comes to mind, but on this Christmas morning, I'd just like to take a moment to reflect on a few of the wonderful things Ahwatukee does to spread some holiday cheer.

1. Foothills Baptist Living Christmas Tree. Ah yes, the church choir performance, which took place Dec. 9-11.

2. Two huge light displays. Ahwatukee residents in general have breathtaking decorating skills, but Frank Kostyun and Frank Polimene go all out each year with their light displays, setting them to music and accepting donations to American Diabetes Association and the Phoenix Children's Hospital.

3. Three Rossi hot drinks. Our resident chef Lori Rossi offered three recipes for hot drinks on cold nights: Mulled wine, hot egg nog and dark hot chocolate. Visit ahwatukee.com for the recipes!

4. Four-legged friend gifts. Ahwatukee residents love their pets, and I'm sure they made a special stop at The Bone Appetit Bakery, Wiggles and Wags Pet Resort or Malinda's Pampered Pets to complete their gift lists.

5. Five live nativities. This was the fifth year that Lamb of God Lutheran performed its depiction of the birth of Jesus. The event took place Nov. 26 right after the Festival of Lights Kick-Off Party this year.

6. Six Smiles of Christmas. There were 200 students from the Tempe Union High School District, including Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe, who donated $20 on Nov. 29, which bought a toy for a student from Edison Elementary School in Mesa. This year was the sixth year the event was hosted by McClintock High School

7. Seven years of fashion. Heather Cisek opened The Purple Skirt seven years ago, bringing the gift of style to all the good little fashion-forward girls and boys (actually, just girls).

8. Eight shares of bundt cake. Nothing Bundt Cakes offers five other flavors of cakes for the holidays: chocolate, chocolate chip, red velvet, lemon, and white chocolate raspberry. An 8-inch bundt serves eight people, perfect for a holiday gathering.

9. Nine "Christmas Carols." The play based on the Dickens' classic ran for its ninth year at Ahwatukee Children's Theatre earlier this month.

10. Ten Winder Wonders. The Kyrene School District hosted nearly 250 families at its 10th Annual Winter Wonderland on Dec. 10. The event gives gifts to children in financially-strapped families across the district.

11. Eleven dancers dancing. Ahwatukee's "Nutcracker," put on by Dance Studio 111 (Eh? See what I did there?), is unique because it's performed completely by young, local dancers.

12. Twelve hot tamales. The Original Burrito & Co. are selling these holiday favorites, $20 for a dozen.

I think I may have listened to too much Christmas music this year, so this list may evoke a familiar tune with you. My apologies. I bear no responsibility for voices of the Muppets getting stuck in your head, though.

But, without further ado, the 12 Days of Tukee. All together now!
