The city of Phoenix Fire Department wants residents to leave fireworks shows to the professionals.
Not that you are legally allowed to shoot off things like Roman Candles in the first place.
Novelty fireworks, such as sparklers, smoke balls, party poppers and snakes are legal year-round. The only exception to this is that residents are not allowed to use any novelty item at a city of Phoenix park during a Fourth of July celebration. Items such as firecrackers, ground sparklers, sparkling wheels, bottle rockets and other aerial devices are 100 percent illegal in the city of Phoenix, even though it is technically legal to purchase them in the state of Arizona. This is due to House Bill 2246 being signed by Gov. Jan Brewer in May 2010.
According to the Phoenix Fire Department, anyone caught using, discharging or igniting fireworks may be charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor punishable by up to $2,500 and/or six months in jail. You must be 16 years or older to purchase fireworks.
Both the cities of Chandler and Tempe have similar laws to Phoenix.
The city is also being proactive in its effort to reduce the risk of a fire at all of the parks, preserves and trail heads. Access will be restricted to places like South Mountain Park, Phoenix Mountains Preserve, Phoenix Mountains Park and Recreation Area and Camelback Mountain on July 4. Gates will close at 3 p.m. on July 4.
Restrictions within these areas include no fireworks, no open fires, no charcoal fires, even in established picnic areas (gas grills are permitted), no alcoholic beverages, no glass beverage containers, and no smoking outside an enclosed vehicle.
The city of Phoenix will host its own free fireworks show and evening event on July 4 at Steele Indian School Park, 300 E. Indian School Road, from 6 to 10 p.m., with the show beginning at 9:30 p.m.
