In an effort to bring a California artists’ idea of empowering cancer patients, Ahwatukee Foothills resident Tina Malko is kicking off a series of shows to sell handmade silk scarves.

Siobhan Silks, named after the artist, are handmade silk scarves that Siobhan then gives to patients in chemotherapy for head coverings.

Malko will be selling the scarves on Nov. 10 in Ahwatukee Foothills at Mountain Park Community Church, 2408 E. Pecos Road. Throughout the winter season, the scarves will also be at the Foothills Women’s Club, the Ahwatukee Recreation Center, 5001 E. Cheyenne Drive, and the Festival of Lights, among others.

“My focus is trying to get these scarves out in the community,” said Malko, where 25 percent of sales will help the artist.

She is also planning to host free workshops where attendees can learn to paint the silk scarves themselves and offer them to someone undergoing chemotherapy.

After first working with the artist, Siobhan, in trade shows in California, Malko immediately wanted to bring them back to Arizona. She reconnected with Siobhan last year and began helping Siobhan’s cause.

The workshop project, called Empowerment thru Accessories, aims to empower those learning to paint that continues with the act of sharing the creation with a person in need, according to the artist’s website.

“That whole process is extremely empowering,” Malko said.

Since the show dates go through December, the workshops are not planned to begin until January.

“You can see how beautiful women feel when they put the scarves on,” added Malko of patients she’s seen receive the scarves. “Just when a woman is fighting her worst fear, to be able to put something around her head that is beautiful and handmade is special.”
