The success of the spring sports kept me away from all but one day of three weeks of spring football.

I was able to see a few minutes of both Desert Vista and Mountain Pointe on Monday.

Desert Vista looked sharp in the passing game and then had some fun on special teams.

Coach Dan Hinds was excited about some of the new techniques Brent Miller was brining to the offensive line.

On the sidelines former defensive studs Mike Arredondo (New Mexico) and Devon Kennard (USC) were yucking it up.

The Thunder might not have the size up front as in years past – other than Jalen Jelks – but will be athletic and hardnosed.

After that I made the short trip over to Mountain Pointe to catch a few minutes.

I was looking forward to meeting defensive back Dominique Fenstermacher, but he wasn’t around because of mononucleosis and then I saw wide receiver Jalen Brown in a walking boot.

No one seemed too concerned as both are expected back when 7-on-7s heat up in June.

Pride coach Norris Vaughan might have been as positive as I’ve ever seen him. The players put in the work, had great attitudes and really used the three weeks to cement the fact that they expect make another run to the Division I title game.

They wrap it up later this week and they’ll be back at it before we know it as Mountain Pointe opens up on August 23 and Desert Vista August 30.

The two teams will meet up later in the season compared to the previous two-year block as the Pride travels to Desert Vista on Oct. 4.
