Local resident, former MPHS grad earns award

Nicholas J. Camarillo, U.S. Navy crew chief and avionics technician, joined the Navy in May of 2007, He has served in Atsugi, Japan, for over three years, and is ending his tour there this month.

The 2002 graduate of Mountain Pointe High School in Ahwatukee will transition to Coronado Island in California.

This month, Camarillo was presented the Naval Air Crewman of the Year award. His accomplishments are vast, including flying 1,000 mishap-free flight hours, ensuring the safe transport of 3 million pounds of high priority materials, 16,200 personnel, and 41 Medevac patients between the USS George Washington (CVN73) and shore bases throughout the Western Pacific. Furthermore, he personally corrected more than 800 airframes and avionics systems discrepancies, thereby, enabling Detachment 5 to sustain an extraordinary 98 percent logistics sortie completion rate during seven western Pacific patrols.

Petty Officer Camarillo's professionalism, unrelenting perseverance, and loyal devotion to duty reflected credit upon him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

Camarillo's family and friends eagerly await his return home to celebrate his accomplishments, his 28th birthday today, and his first Christmas at home since 2007.
