Q: Where are you from and what did you do before opening your business?
A: I grew up in New York City and Michigan. I have lived in Ahwatukee for seven years. I am a registered nurse and have my bachelor's degree in business. I opened my first gym in 1999 in a college town outside of St Louis.
Q: Why did you open your business in Ahwatukee?
A: The community welcomed my first fitness venture in the area three years ago, a Women's Only Boot Camp. I have an awesome client base in the area that has supported the business and together we would like to see strength and endurance training in women grow substantially. I read so many myths about women and strength training that I want everyone to know no matter what age and what shape you are CrossFit can help you look and feel better within two weeks of training.
Q: How did you get the idea to open your business?
A: Two years ago I tried CrossFit and loved it. It changed my fitness regime and gave me a confidence about my body and mind that I never had. I had to share this with my current clients and the first day I brought Olympic weights to my classes and witnessed my clients' "I can do this" reaction. I knew I had to bring the "results" this type of workout gives you to more women.
Q: What type of merchandise/services do you sell?
A: Ahwatukee CrossFit offers five, one-hour classes daily in a women's only small group setting, an after-school teen female only class and individual personal training. We also provide a nutritional package in conjunction with our fitness classes. On the weekends we have running, hiking and biking groups that meet at the gym. Every trainer in my facility is CrossFit Level 1 certified; I have also spent 14 months working with a USAW certified weight lifting coach on form and technique to coach strength training to women specific clients and in two months I will test to be one of very few females in the Valley with the certification.
Q: What does your business offer that no one else does?
A: Ahwatukee CrossFit is the world's first women-only CrossFit gym in the world. We offer CrossFit classes to women of all ages and all fitness level. If you're a business women and you want to be successful at work, join us. If you're a stay-at-home mom and you want to look and feel great about yourself, join us. I guarantee your confidence and body image will soar within four weeks of attending. You will realize, "You can lift weights, you can move faster, you do have core strength." Our gym's atmosphere is filled with supportive like-minded girls that want to succeed in the sport of life. I also offer a CrossFit class to young women (ages 14 to 18) who want to "improve" their athletic performance by increasing their muscular strength and endurance and help them avoid injury and recover faster. Not a high school athlete? Join us anyway, you will gain confidence and feel better about your body image. Our young women need a supportive, un-intimating place to come and feel good about their accomplishments and we provide that after school Monday through Thursday.
Q: How have residents of the community responded to your business?
A: One of my clients had this to say: "At age 48 I needed to make a lifestyle change, I realized exercise and nutrition would change my life. I joined CrossFit, I have reached my weight loss goals and now I am working on my strength goals, my confidence and job performance (sales) are through the roof," JD.
Q: What does your business have in store for the future?
A: Our low trainer-client ratio means we are actively looking to add two more female trainers with Oly lifting certification. We would like to host running, biking and hiking clubs to meet and be based out of the gym for organized weekend hike/runs/biking activities. And with the holidays around the corner, come in and purchase a gift certificate and take advantage of our sales.
Q: Anything else you want the community to know about you or your business?
A: My staff will meet and exceed your expectations. Just try us for one month. You will actually learn about proper fitness "form" to avoid injuries, gain confidence and have fun. No contracts, small group personal training and you will see the results.
