The Ahwatukee Little League Dawgs were unable to match their 2006 predecessors and were knocked out of the state tournament Thursday.
The Dawgs lost 8-4 to Rio Rico in the championship series in Oro Valley to have their season come to an end.
ALL lost on Tuesday to Rio Rico, came back to win in the consolation backet and had to win Thursday to force a winner-take-all game on Friday.
Rio Rico proved to be too much and will now represent Arizona at the West Regional in San Bernardino, Calif. The tournament starts Aug. 5.
The Dawgs went 10-3 since the start of the District 13 tournament and were the third team from the Foothills to advance to the state event since 2006. The '06 squad made it all the way to Williamsport, Pa., for the Little League World Series.
The team outscored its opponents 161-77 but didn’t have an answer for Rio Rico, which beat ALL 10-0 to start state tournament.
