Several Ahwatukee Foothills Bunco players hope to turn their usual social gathering into a large fundraiser for two non-profit organizations.

When Laura Chapnek and Mita Plenn play Bunco with their usual crew, a game that involves throwing three dice and trying to reach a certain score, it is usually just for fun.

But the duo is hoping to recruit people of all ages to raise money for the Down Syndrome Network, of which Chapnek is director, and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Plenn will be participating in the three-day, 60-mile walk in November.

"It is a social event that is entertaining no matter who you are," Chapnek said. "A lot of times the summer is a slow period for our game so we hope this fundraiser can inspire more people to come out and play."

The Super Bunco event will take place on Saturday, July 16 at Mountain View Lutheran Church, 11002 S. 48th St., with an entry fee of $25, or $30 the day of the event at the door.

Bunco is a game based on chance that involves teams of two competing against each other.

A player rolls the set of dice in an effort to be the first to 21 points. There are six rounds in each game and each round coincides with a number on the dice.

Chapnek and Plenn are planning to split the proceeds evenly between the two organizations with a small portion going into a pot for the winner of the tournament.

Plenn said she signed up for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day after a neighbor told her about the significance of the event and how much money her team raised.

The team she will be walking for, Team THRIVR, was the top fundraising team in Arizona that raised more $146,000 last year. Plenn said her goal is to beat that this year.

"Our team has an aggressive goal this year," she said. "The 60 miles I will be walking is nothing compared to what women who are fighting breast cancer are going through."

The Super Bunco event will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
