Old books from one home will become timeless treasures for another at the Y OPAS annual book sale on Saturday, Oct. 27.
This year’s fifth annual used book sale will take place at the Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA, 1030 E. Liberty Lane, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. With thousands of books to choose from, organizers are confident there will be something for everyone — even among a rise in popularity for e-readers.
“There may come a day with e-readers when we may not sell as many or receive as many books, but this year we certainly feel it will be successful,” said Maureen Davies, a Y OPAS volunteer who has helped with the book sale all five years. “A lot of people, even if they have an e-reader, still enjoy books and that just depends on the experience. I have an e-reader, but I still enjoy books. I have friends who do the same. I think we’re good for a few more years.”
Davies said the Y OPAS book sale is popular for many reasons. They have a large selection but she has also heard it’s a very organized book sale when compared to others in the area.
“We’ve had some people who are regulars at our book sale,” she said. “Some of them go to book sales quite frequently, but they particularly like ours for the organization of the books and the price of the books.”
Linda Jochim, Y OPAS Community Outreach director, said organizers spend hours getting the books sorted. The books are organized by fiction and non-fiction first, and then into sub-categories like mystery, romance or children’s books. This year the group had a unit donated to them by Ahwatukee Foothills Self Storage and so they have been able to get organized early.
Books cost anywhere from 50 cents to $2.
Last year, the group had more than 4,000 books and raised $1,600. Davies said this year they’re on track to have even more books. The YMCA’s Outreach Program for Ahwatukee Seniors, staffed by volunteers and two part-time employees, is run solely on grants and donations from the community. This annual book sale makes up the difference.
Books, CDs and DVDs are still being collected. There is a special need for children’s books. Donations can be dropped off at the Ahwatukee Foothills Family YMCA or Mountain View Lutheran Church, 11002 S. 48th St. Organizers request no encyclopedia donations.
The books will go for half price after 2 p.m. on Oct. 27 or $5 to fill a grocery bag. Any remaining books after 4 p.m. will be donated to another book sale.
Organizers have been able to sort books early this year, but could still use some help lifting and transporting all books to and from the event on Oct. 27. Those volunteers would be needed from about 6 to 7:30 a.m. and 4 to 5 p.m. To volunteer or for more information, call (602) 212-6088.
