Convincing men to use sunscreen isn’t easy, but a local dermatology provider at Ahwatukee Skin and Laser is hoping her new men’s skin care line will help make sunscreen and skin care more manly.
“Men do not take care of their skin,” said physician assistant Linda Silva, who has a background in oncology. “I got to the point where I was really sick of taking skin cancer off of men. I thought let’s do something backward and make it fun to wear sun screen and make it fun to take care of your skin.”
Silva created Elite Skin Neogenesis and recently launched her first line of skin care products, the Ride Line. It’s a system of four products that work together to give men better skin. The products are WASH (body wash for the face and body), STROKE (shave gel), LUBE (lotion) and SCREEN (sunscreen). Each of the products is as natural as possible but also formulated and marketed to be appealing to men.
“Men don’t wear sunscreen,” Silva said. “They’ve never really been taught to wash their face or wear sunscreen or put lotion on. The newer generation of kids are being taught and we’re starting them off automatically with sunscreen. The older generation believes they don’t need sunscreen. They want to get a tan. I shudder when I hear that.”
The Ride Sunscreen is only SPF (Sun Protection Factor) 30. Silva said studies have found anything over 50 is really unnecessary but 30 is what she believes people should wear on a daily basis. The Ride Sunscreen was created at 30 SPF so that it would be light and not bothersome to men who might be hesitant to wear it.
Sunscreen is only a portion of the complete system. Overall skin health is the goal. The body wash uses tea tree oil as an anti-bacterial which helps heal and reduce acne. The shave gel uses alpha hydroxy acid to smooth skin texture and reduce signs of wrinkles. The lotion features very natural products like olive oil that won’t irritate the skin. None of the products have any dyes or fragrances.
“I created this and I totally believe in it,” Silva said. “I know men need it. They need skin care.”
Silva has plans for a women’s line and teen’s line in the future.
