What do United States Congressman David Schweikert, State Senate Majority Leader John McComish, Phoenix City Councilman Sal DiCicco, Kedrick Ellison of the Phoenix Community and Economic Development Department, Kyrene Superintendent Dr. David Shauer, Tempe Union High School Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Baca, and Pangea Development have in common?

They have all presented at the Monthly Speaker Series of the Public Policy Committee (PPC) of the Ahwatukee Foothills Chamber of Commerce (AFCC). The Monthly Speaker Series takes place the first Friday of each month, and from economic development to health care, the PPC is committed to providing information impacting our business and residential communities.

As Arizona’s unique cul-de-sac, the Phoenix Village of Ahwatukee is bordered by South Mountain Park to the north, while neighboring Tempe, Chandler and the Gila River Indian Community (GRIC) lie to the east and south, respectively. Reflecting this blended location the AFCC is primarily business centered, while more in tune with the residential concerns of the Ahwatukee community than the traditional chamber.

The AFCC does not endorse issues, but rather educates its members and the community in a more holistic sense. Ahwatukee is situated to partner with the East Valley, such as the Kyrene and Tempe Union High school districts, as well as the Interstate 10 and Loop 202 corridor business zones. The monthly PPC Speaker Series reflects the impact of national, state, East Valley, Phoenix and Gila River Indian Community issues in the Ahwatukee community.

The next step of the PPC is to begin presenting special events, starting with a debate of the city of Phoenix District 6 City Council candidates seeking to represent the Ahwatukee and Biltmore areas. Because of the diversity of the geography of our district the PPC wants to educate Ahwatukee voters on the similarities and differences unique to District 6 as our City Council representative shares resources with our fellow citizens outside of Ahwatukee.

The PPC is partnering with the Ahwatukee Foothills News to provide a debate at the end of July around the time that early ballots are mailed out by the city of Phoenix. Timing is imperative in order to inform our business members and the public of the importance of the role of our City Council representative. We will keep our members and the community informed as details of the debate become finalized.

The AFCC continues to provide greater value to its business members, and the community. We are developing sponsorship opportunities to enable us to expand the offerings of the PPC beyond the successful Monthly Speakers Series.

The goal of the PPC is to provide timely information on legislative issues, existing and pending on how to do business with the city of Phoenix as well as our neighbors. The community is invited to attend the Monthly Speakers Series and learn about issues of major importance to Ahwatukee’s economic vitality and quality of life.
