A new company in Ahwatukee Foothills says it's changing the way people pay for chiropractic care to prove it's not only beneficial for overall health, but that it can be affordable.

The Joint touts itself as a new twist to the typical chiropractic care. There are no appointments, no X-rays and no insurance.

The model is similar to that of Massage Envy. Most people pay a monthly membership, though memberships are not required. For $49 patients can get four adjustments per month.

Most people make their first trip to the chiropractor after they suffer an injury to their back or neck, said Dr. Brian Henry, primary doctor for The Joint in Ahwatukee. He says acute injuries are not the only reason to get a professional adjustment.

"Where chiropractic really comes in to play is how it affects the nervous system," Henry said. "We don't really straighten bones out necessarily, we try to affect the nervous system in a positive way. There are interferences that take place along this pathway, that are called subluxation, and that's really what we're trying to keep at a minimum in someone's life. That keeps everything working the way it should, and if everything is working the way it should that will keep your body healthy for more of the time.

"We're not so much trying to reduce muscle tension, or trying to get people to relax, that's more for massage. We're trying to affect the nervous system in the most powerful way that we know how."

The Joint identifies chiropractic care as just another way to stay healthy, complimenting other memberships to health clubs or massage programs.

Rob Pinkham, owner of The Joint in Ahwatukee, said he's planning on opening another location at Chandler Fashion Center, and is considering a third location.

"Very rarely do you see people come in and then every single one leaves saying, ‘I already feel better,'" Pinkham said. "I do the Ironman Triathlon, I'm very active, I think this is a critical part of keeping people healthy. We think Ahwatukee is a great place to do it because of the types of folks that are here. A lot of people in Ahwatukee spend a lot of time hiking and biking, and we think this is a great wellness area. "

There's a simple exam when people come in for the first time. The Joint is not set up to treat serious injuries, so they may refer some patients to a specialist who can handle the type of care they may need. Chiropractors at The Joint only provide adjustments, not any type of therapy that may be suggested by a doctor.

The Joint, 4910 E. Ray Road, Suite G9, is open Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. No appointment is required and an initial adjustment is $19. For more information, visit thejoint.com.
