After months of searching and an intense interview process, the city of Phoenix has named Daniel V. Garcia as its new police chief.

Garcia comes to the city of Phoenix after 34 years of law enforcement experience in Dallas, most recently serving as the department's assistant police chief.

The Phoenix Police Department conducted a nationwide search to fill the position of police chief after former Public Safety Manager Jack Harris resigned in 2011. City Manager David Cavazos said Garcia had to go through five separate interviews and extensive reference checks before being selected.

Garcia says his goal is to do policing with a purpose. That, he said, means nurturing and protecting our democracy, ensuring justice, having a strong spirit of service for the entire community, having a strong fundamental fairness to all the community and protecting people from harm.

"That's the foundation that I expect the Phoenix Police Department to embrace," Garcia said. "That's the direction they will hear from me and that's what we are going to practice every day."

Garcia said he chose Phoenix because of it's size and reputation within the law enforcement community.

Garcia earned his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Sam Houston State University. He is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy and Police Executive Research Forum. Garcia will take over the position in early May.
