As a lawyer, Jeff Hovik has done a great deal of writing in his career, but most of it has been nonfiction and dealt with legal issues. The Ahwatukee Foothills resident set his sights on writing fiction and after almost two years, his novel Southern Exposure is going on sale to the public.

Hovik, who does a lot of personal injuries cases, described his novel as a love story and came up with the idea on a visit to the resort town of Rocky Point in Mexico, which just so happens to be the setting of Southern Exposure.

"I started thinking about a young man from here (Phoenix) and a local woman from down there and my imagination started going wild and I thought it would make a great premise for a book," Hovik said.

Once he began writing, Hovik said he would sit down and write a few pages every weeknight to keep the tone and characters consistent through the novel. But that was not the easiest thing to do.

"It was a pretty daunting task because sometimes I would come home tired and it would take a lot of discipline to write every night," he said. "It's kind of the keeping the same feeling consistent as you move forward through the novel. You just have to grind it out."

Overall, it took Hovik about six months to finish writing Southern Exposure and the editing and design took another nine months. The best place to purchase the novel is through his website, www.SouthernExposureNovel.com, or by calling his Ahwatukee Foothills office, (480) 477-8500. On the website, viewers can also read an excerpt.

"It's not just a love story, there are some twists at the end that I hope will surprise some people," he said.
