A moving company that focuses on teamwork and customer service sounded like a perfect business opportunity for recent college graduate Mike Neumayr and his father, Ed.
Ed owns a Great Clips franchise in Ahwatukee Foothills and while at an International Franchising Association meeting in Florida he ran into the co-owner of College Hunks Hauling Junk and Moving. He learned more about the company and an opportunity to take over a franchise in Tempe and realized it would be perfect for Mike.
After a lot of research the two decided that Ed would purchase the business and once Mike had learned all it took to run it, he’d take over ownership.
“In franchising it’s important to find a franchise that matches your skill sets,” Ed said. “The skill sets needed in this job were leadership, a strong sales acumen, teamwork environment. Michael playing college lacrosse, the leadership and teamwork was a natural for him. I actually gave him a behavioral competency test that we use at my other business and he scored incredibly high in sales. That’s the majority of this business, so he was a good fit.”
College Hunks Hauling Junk started with some college buddies in Florida moving and hauling junk for people in the neighborhood. Today it’s a national company that has become one of the largest employers of college students in the nation.
“The spin on it is trying to reinvent the moving industry, which isn’t the most glamorous thing out there,” Mike said. “We try to employ college students or in that same age bracket. We want clean-cut, hard-working guys that can interact well with each other and the customer. That’s important. From a client standpoint we want them to feel comfortable with someone in their house. The guys are going to be able to interact and provide a one-of-a-kind customer service experience.”
The fact that the business has no set hours, like a retail store, makes it a good fit for college students looking for part-time work. Mike and Ed hope that as their franchise grows they’ll be able to give their employees an internship-like experience where they’ll be able to learn more about accounting, book keeping, scheduling, and managing a business before they graduate.
The Neumayrs took over the business earlier this month and already have big plans for the future. For now, they’re starting small and making sure each employee is carefully screened, background checked and has the right kind of personality they need.
