High school student Trenton Keller, 16, was found dead by family members early morning Sunday.

Keller was a member of both the junior varsity lacrosse and football teams at Desert Vista High School.

Phoenix police officials are investigating Keller’s death as a suicide.

“It’s very sad,” said Desert Vista Principal Dr. Anna Battle. “To think that whatever this young man was experiencing was too much.”

Counselors on site were preparing to advise students and other faculty members on Monday. A small memorial site was also started Monday morning near the student parking lot, where students would be able to leave cards, flowers and other mementoes to Keller.

The Desert Vista lacrosse team released an announcement on its website Monday, stating “Our thoughts and prayers go out to John, Linda, Wes, and the rest of their family. We all share in their loss and will remember Trenton fondly.”

Battle said Keller’s mother opened up her home to students and parents Sunday evening, and that many wanted the appropriate chance to mourn.

As Desert Vista has faced a hard summer with the loss of three alums and its beloved security guard, Pat Quinn, Battle stressed the importance of supporting each other with experiences like these.

“These challenges are out of our control, but loving and caring for others are truly deliberate actions,” Battle said. “That is what we have had to do with losses over the summer and this is what we will do for Trenton’s family.”

Memorial services are planned for 2 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 3, at Mountain Park Community Church, 2408 E. Pecos Road, for those wishing to pay respects.

The Cava Family would like to express our sincere condolences. John, Linda, we grieve with you and hope that time will help to soften the pain… Although we know that it will never, ever, go away. We have all been shaken by this news. Trenton (TK, as I liked to call him) was one of my favorites. You see, I coached TK in the SEV and NYS football leagues. He was the most challenging kids I have ever come across… not in a bad way of course, in an inquisitive way… one that helped everyone else in the squad, learn. He was the guy that wanted to do it right... each time. My favorite memory is when we were playing the Tigers in a NYS game… we were getting our hats handed to us on every play… Not one first down all afternoon. The game was almost over, and I made kind of a silly decision that we were going to make one first down, so I moved all of our big guys and backs to one side of the offensive line and directed them to open a hole for TK. Trenton had not had much of a chance to run the ball in games, so his eyes got really big when he heard my plan. Well, the Thunder got to the line, Down Set Hut! Hand off to Trenton Keller going to the right, there is a HOLE… First Down! You have never heard a group of parents cheer so much and hard for a single first down! As I write this, I remember the HUGE smile on his face and the sense of accomplishment he had in making our one and only first down. Trenton… we will never forget you! Rest in peace TK, Rest in peace!

Welcome!
