Mountain Pointe has had some pretty stout defenses under Norris Vaughan, but there just might be something different about this group.

For one thing, the Pride has not given up a single point in the second half this season through four games. It would be one thing if Mountain Pointe was playing Sierra Vista Buena every week, but Hamilton and Desert Vista were also blanked.

So it is anything but a hollow stat.

“That comes not only from adjustment from coaches but from the players,” Pride coach Norris Vaughan said. “They are learning on the move, too.

“We’ve had some good defensive teams. The first year (2009) we had a really good defense. This year, we have some very good football players. They might not be Division I prospects but they know how to play team defense and get the job done.”

The Landry brothers (senior Landry and junior Wesley) are physical, while first-year starters like defensive lineman Charlie Trevino and linebacker Aaron Blank have been essential in mixing with safety Jalen Brown along linemen Kenny Lacy and Natrell Curtis, who are being recruited as offensive linemen.

Vaughan and defensive coordinator Jeff Decker have done a great job putting the right mix in and developing backups.

The Pride defense might face their biggest offensive threat this week against Chandler, but it is clear they are ready for any challenge.
