The window for registering for Desert Vista High School’s annual Summer Math Academy is about to close.

Parents who want to help their child improve on their current skills, retake a previous course, or just advance to the next level of math, can sign up for the six-week course until May 15.

This is the 13th year the academy has been offered to the public and is available in the following subjects: sixth-grade math, seventh-grade math, pre-algebra, algebra, and honors geometry. It is open to incoming fourth- through ninth-grade students.

The camp is May 29 to July 6, Monday through Friday, from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Jeff Baluch, DV math teacher, is now organizing the academy since Larry Strom left the school after many years at the helm.

He said 60 percent of the teachers are from Desert Vista, while most of the rest come from within the Kyrene School District.

The quality of teachers and their commitment to return is a huge benefit for the students, Baluch said.

“We probably get 90 percent of teachers back from the previous summer,” he said. “Once someone gets into the program, they tend to stay in it. It helps create a consistency in the teaching.”

They have about 200 people registered currently and expect around 300 to 350 total. In the past that number has been as high as 400.

To register, visit http://tinyurl.com/c2ubz98 and download and print the registration flier, which can be turned in to the DV bookstore during normal school hours. Prices are: algebra 1-2, $350; honors geometry, $350; and all other classes, $270.

Classes are located at Desert Vista High School, 16440 E. 32nd St., at the southeast corner of Liberty Lane and 32nd Street, in room C114. For more details, contact Jeff Baluch at jbaluch@tuhsd.k12.az.us.
