Starting Sunday, Tempe police are kicking off efforts with the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to step up enforcement patrols targeting seat belt use and child restraints.

Child safety seats reduce the risk of passenger-car death by 71 percent among infants and 54 percent among children ages 1 through 4, and motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children up to age 14, according to a news release from the Tempe Police Department.

National Child Passenger Safety Week is today through Sept. 25.
