The Child Abuse Prevention & Awareness Coalition will have a free Family Day 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 6, in Tempe to kick off National Child Abuse Prevention Month.
The family day will include booths and information for kids and families, including displays of fire trucks, ambulances and a mobile command unit. There will also be bounce houses, crafts and other fun activities for the children.
In 2011, 71 child deaths were attributed to maltreatment. On average, one child in Arizona is abused or neglected every hour. The coalition was started in response to the death of 3-year-old Schala Vera of Chandler, who was beaten to death by her mother’s boyfriend in 2009.
The event will be held at Kiwanis Park, located at 6111 S. All-America Way, Tempe.
