Big Surf wasn't just a big deal locally when it opened in Tempe in 1969. It was the first wave pool in the entire nation. You can learn the history of the iconic water park this week, courtesy of the Tempe Historical Society's monthly lunch session. The society will discuss Big Surf from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Tempe History Museum, 809 E. Southern Ave. The event is free, and attendees are encouraged to bring a lunch.
This session is the first in a series that runs through May and features lectures commemorating Arizona's centennial. For more information about the series, visit www.tempe.gov/museum or call (480) 350-5100.
