It’s one of the Valley’s most iconic scenes, and now you can help with the finishing touches.

The Rio Salado Foundation is looking for volunteers to help with a landscaping project June 30 at the historic Hayden Flour Mill in downtown Tempe. The foundation is asking for one or two hours of help starting at 6 a.m. June 30 to tote rocks that will fill landscaping baskets in the mill’s terraced area. The foundation asks volunteers to bring gloves and to wear closed toe shows. Water, protein bars and souvenirs will be provided.

The foundation is working on the final steps to create a public plaza at the mill, which has been fenced off since the late 1990s. The fence is now down, and an Oct. 5 outdoor event will formally dedicate the space. To volunteer, call (480) 350-5190 or send an email to maryanna_bastin@tempe.gov.
