We’re not sure what’s going to be more dicey this weekend: a cold dip in Tempe Town Lake, or braving the roads on Sunday.

Sunday marks this year’s installment of the Ironman Arizona/Tempe triathlon event – an all-day showcase of some of the world’s most finely-tuned and most resilient athletes, right here in the East Valley’s own backyard.

The event starts with the swimming leg in Tempe – water temps are expected to be in the low 60s – followed by a 100-mile bike venture through Mesa, Fountain Hills and up the Beeline Highway toward Payson. It concludes with a full marathon around the Tempe lake and through Phoenix’s Papago Park.

Since the race kicks off in the early a.m. and runs until the dead of night, Sunday will require some maneuvering if you head out on the roads.
