Tempe authorities evacuated 10 homes Tuesday when a man threatened to kill his family and then barricaded himself inside a house, police said.

Jonathan Harvey, 25, surrendered peacefully about noon by walking outside and lifting his shirt to show he had no weapons, said Tempe police spokesman Sgt. Dan Masters. Tactical units had been preparing to make contact with Harvey when he came out of the house in the 1600 block of East Baker Drive, near McClintock Drive and Baseline Road.

Harvey was arrested and booked into Tempe City Jail on suspicion of threatening and intimidating with intent to injure.

Police said the incident began with a family disagreement about 9:40 a.m. The family escaped, but Harvey barricaded himself inside.

Police evacuated neighboring homes because they believed Harvey had handguns, rifles and armorpiercing ammunition.
