Suspect arrested in fatal Tempe stabbing

Tempe police have arrested a suspect in a fatal stabbing that took place Saturday morning.

Police say Gordon Benson, 60, was arrested without incident about 6:15 p.m. Monday. A motive is still under investigation, according to Sgt. Steve Carbajal.

Police say the stabbing took place in the 2000 block of East Apache Boulevard, between McClintock Drive and the Loop 101 Price Freeway. The victim was identified Monday morning as Fred U. Bustamante, 47, who lived at the address.

A vehicle Benson was driving when police said he fled the scene of the stabbing had been located earlier. Anyone with information about the crime can call Tempe police at (480) 350-8311 or Silent Witness at (480) WITNESS.

Mesa police are investigating another fatal stabbing that also took place early Saturday at the Rawl's Motel about 3 miles away in Mesa, where Apache becomes Main Street. There is no suspect named at this time.
