Authorities say a pedestrian is dead after a light rail train accident somewhere along the westbound tracks from Mesa to Tempe.
The Arizona Republic says it's the first fatality since the Metro light rail began operating in the Phoenix metropolitan area in 2008.
Someone called Tempe police shortly before 1 p.m. Friday after noticing a body on the tracks.
Mesa police say that by the time the light rail train stopped at the Priest Drive station in Tempe, only the body's upper torso was with the train.
They say the incident appears to have started at the Sycamore Drive stop in Mesa.
The gender of the victim hasn't been released.
Detectives are checking the cameras from the light rail stations and the train itself to try and determine what happened.
