Hungry? Let's hope the competitors are when they gather in Tempe to see who will represent Arizona in Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest. It's not unusual for participants to gulp down 40 or 50 hot dogs in mere minutes as they compete for a spot in the national contest in Coney Island, N.Y.
Registration is already closed for the Arizona qualifier, but you can cheer on the contestants at 1 p.m., Saturday at Arizona Mills Food Court, 5000 S. Arizona Mills Circle.
Our state winner will need a strong stomach. Joey Chestnut of San Jose, CA is seeking his fifth straight title this year, and he holds the world record: 68 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes.
Forget the mustard and relish. Break out the Tums.
