The Tempe Community Council has chosen Alice and Ralph Goitia as recipients of the 2011 Don Carlos Humanitarian Award. The Goitias were selected for their 47 years of public service, including Tempe Sister Cities, Rotary, Assistance League of East Valley and educational involvement. Ralph Goitia was superintendent of the Tempe Elementary School District from 1975 to 1989, and Alice Goitia taught bilingual special education and directed the bilingual program for 16 schools.
The two will be honored at 6 p.m. Oct 10 at the Arizona Historical Society at an event where the public is welcome. Tickets are $50 per person, $80 for two tickets or $400 for a table of 10. Information: www.tempe.gov/tcc or (480) 858-2307.
The Don Carlos award is named after Tempe pioneer Charles Trumbull Hayden, known as "Don Carlos" among the community's Hispanic residents.
