Mesa is the recipient of two $200,000 Brownfields Assessment grants from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The grants will fund property assessments near the Gilbert Road Light Rail Extension Route — a 1.9 mile stretch across Main Street.

Mesa is one of three Arizona cities to receive the grant. The grant funds property cleanup and redevelopment in contaminated areas, boosts economies and creates jobs while maintaining public health and environmental conditions.

Mesa received two similar grants in 2011 for environmental assessments near the light rail extension between Sycamore and Mesa Drive.
