A combination of an increase in crude fuel prices and regional refinery issues has Arizona residents paying a higher price at the pump to start the new year.

According to AAA Arizona, the price to fill the tank jumped 4.3 cents in Arizona over the last seven days to $3.191 a gallon. That, however, is still lower than the national increase of 5.7 cents and $3.325 a gallon. East Valley motorists paid an average of $3.016 a gallon, which is below the state level but still represents a 5.4-cent jump from the week prior and 18 cents more when compared to the same time in 2013.

The agency, however, does not project the price of a gallon of gas to remain higher than it was when compared to the cost in 2013.

“2013 was a pretty mild year for gas prices,” said Linda Gorman, director of communications and public affairs for AAA Arizona, in a press release. “We anticipate that prices will likely average slightly less in 2014, especially as cars grow more fuel efficient and refineries expand production.”
