Mesa has set up a new phone line for residents to get information about fair housing rights. The number is part of a larger effort to increase its education efforts on fair housing regulations that make it illegal for anyone selling or renting a house to discriminate because of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or family status.

Some of the most common discrimination practices are refusing to rent or provide services, different terms for different customers, giving preferential treatment because of race, excluding families or steering renters or buyers to a particular area. Complaints received by Mesa are forwarded to the Arizona Attorney General’s office for review. The housing rights information can be obtained at (480) 644-5000, (480) 644-2778 (TDD) or FairHousing@mesaaz.gov. Additional information can be found at http://www.mesaaz.gov/diversity/FairHousing.aspx.
