Memorial services have been scheduled on Friday and Saturday for Robert Brinton, the longtime Mesa tourism executive and spring training champion who died unexpectedly on Friday.

The services are open to the public.

A visitation is scheduled for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Red Mountain Institute of Religion at the Red Mountain campus of Mesa Community College, 7126 E. McKellips Road.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, also at the MCC Red Mountain campus.

Brinton, 60, was the immediate past president of the Cactus League, where he worked two decades to promote spring training, recruit new teams and keep franchises from leaving the Valley.

Some of his earliest memories involve meeting Chicago Cubs players during spring training in the 1950s, when his father Dilworth worked to bring the team to Mesa for spring training.

Brinton was a major force in a two-year fight to keep the Cubs from moving to Florida, a deal the city finalized days before Brinton’s death.

He gave several Major League Baseball teams tours of Hohokam Stadium this year to keep the facility active when the Cubs move to a new complex in 2014.

Brinton was president of the Mesa Convention and Visitors Bureau.

He is survived by his wife, Nanette, and eight children. Several memorial funds are being established in his name. Information will be posted at

The Maricopa County Medical Examiner on Tuesday in a preliminary report attributed Brinton’s death to hardening of the arteries caused by atherosclerothic cardiovascular disease.
