A man has died after being ejected from his vehicle when police say a 17-year-old girl failed to yield at an east Mesa intersection late Thursday.
Mesa police said that the girl, who was driving a Kia Optima, was attempting to turn south from Grove onto Signal Butte Road about 10:20 p.m. Thursday, collided with Joseph McKown's Chevy Blazer, which also was traveling south on Signal Butte, causing it to rollover.
McKown, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene as emergency crews were preparing to transport him to a nearby hospital by helicopter, Mesa detective Steve Berry told the Tribune.
The girl was not suspected to be impaired, and police are continuing to investigate.
McKown was an employee of East Valley Tire on Main Street in Mesa. He leaves behind a wife and a 3-year-old daughter. The Joseph McKown Benefit Memorial Fund was established at Wells Fargo Bank, NA, with account No. 9855682382.
