Because grease is the major culprit for sewer blockages in homes, Mesa is collecting fryer oil over a two-month period so residents can dispose of it without pouring it down the drain. The city will collect grease from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 14 through Jan. 13, and recycle it into biodiesel.
Residents can drop off grease at fire stations at: 1426 S. Extension, 730 S. Greenfield Road, 7035 E. Southern Ave., 2430 S. Ellsworth Road and 5950 E. Virginia St.
Mesa advises residents to never pour oil and grease down drains and to avoid using hot water to wash the grease away. To prevent grease from clogging pipes, Mesa recommends scraping food scraps, oil and grease from utensils into the trash before washing. Also, use a paper towel to help keep grease out of wash water. The city is now recycling oil into biodiesel? That explains why the place we always used to get our biodiesel can't get their city permits renewed. They are always running into a new snag created by the city of mesa! I call foul.
