1 killed, officer injured in Mesa crash

Mesa police say one of their officers has been injured in an accident in which an elderly driver was killed Tuesday morning.
Mesa police Sgt. Tony Landato said the accident happened at Main and 80th streets involving the officer’s patrol car and a van.
Landato said the patrol car was traveling east on Main Street when the male driver in the van heading north on 80th Street was struck by the officer.
The driver of the van was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. There was no immediate word on the victim’s age.
The 49-year-old female officer needed to be extricated from her vehicle and was taken to the hospital with serious, but non life-threatening injuries, Landato said.
The officer was not responding to a call when the accident happened, police said.
